Porta Potty Rental Cost Calculator

Porta-potty pricing has two different products hiding behind one word: a single-day event rental, where the truck roll dominates, and a 28-day site rental, where weekly servicing is the ongoing cost. This calculator prices both, sizes the unit count against the charts rental operators publish — one per 50 guests per 4 hours for events, OSHA's Table J-1 and the one-per-10-crew rule for job sites — and itemizes the add-ons that actually move a quote: extra service visits, distance and after-hours delivery.

What the window assumes

  • Range is 80%–135% of the computed typical — the spread between discount local operators and national brands or high-cost metros.
  • Priced as a single-day event rental: one delivery, one pickup, one service visit. Multi-day events are billed closer to the weekly and monthly rates below — ask for a multi-day quote before you accept a day rate × days.
  • Planning-chart rule: 1 unit per 50 guests for the first 4 hours, doubled for 4–8 hours and again beyond 8 hours → 2 units for 100 guests over 4 hours.
  • Unit-rental lines scale with your state's materials multiplier; delivery, servicing and after-hours lines scale with its labor multiplier (see the regional note under the results).
  • Counts are toilet seats. OSHA's Table J-1 also pairs each seat with a urinal for crews over 20 — urinals are a cheap add-on that relieves pressure on the units, but this estimate doesn't price one.
  • Event sizing ignores alcohol, food service and a mostly-female guest list — all three push restroom visits up, and operators commonly raise the unit count when alcohol is served. There is no published multiplier: ask the operator what they add.
  • No handwash stations in this estimate. Food or drink service usually triggers a health-department requirement for at least one — add stations before you sign.
  • Not included: permits or right-of-way fees for a unit on a public street, generators or power/water hookups for a trailer, winterized or heated units, and damage waivers — quoted separately by the operator.

Typical portable toilet rental cost ranges

Portable toilet rental cost by unit type (28-day job-site rental)

Typical cost runs from $150 (Standard unit — construction site) to $3,600 (Luxury restroom trailer (multi-stall)).

ProjectLowTypicalHigh
Standard unit — construction site (per 28 days)$120$150$200
Deluxe / flushing unit (per 28 days)$380$480$650
ADA / wheelchair-accessible unit (per 28 days)$240$300$410
Luxury restroom trailer (multi-stall) (per 28 days)$2,880$3,600$4,860
One unit, delivered within the free radius, weekly servicing included, at national-average rates. Luxury trailers vary the widest of anything on this page — stall count, HVAC and running water drive the number more than any chart can.

Portable toilet rental cost by unit type (single-day event, delivered)

ProjectLowTypicalHigh
Standard event unit (per day)$140$180$240
Deluxe / flushing unit (per day)$280$350$470
ADA / wheelchair-accessible unit (per day)$200$250$340
Luxury restroom trailer (multi-stall) (per day)$1,440$1,800$2,430
One unit for a 50-guest, four-hour event — the smallest event the sizing rule serves. Multiply by the count the rule gives you (100 guests over 6 hours needs 4 units). The day rate is the most expensive way to rent: the same unit on a 28-day job-site rental works out to about $5 per day, a few percent of the event rate, because one truck roll amortizes across the month. Event operators often quote a weekend (Friday–Sunday) rather than a day.

How many units: OSHA minimums vs. the one-per-10-crew rule

ProjectLowTypicalHigh
Crew of 5 (1 unit — OSHA 1, rule 1)$120$150$200
Crew of 10 (1 unit — OSHA 1, rule 1)$120$150$200
Crew of 20 (2 units — OSHA 1, rule 2)$240$300$410
Crew of 40 (4 units — OSHA 1, rule 4)$480$600$810
Crew of 80 (8 units — OSHA 2, rule 8)$960$1,200$1,620
Crew of 150 (15 units — OSHA 4, rule 15)$1,800$2,250$3,040
OSHA numbers come from 29 CFR 1926.51(c)(1) Table J-1 (toilet seats only; the standard also pairs a urinal with each seat for crews over 20). The industry rule is one unit per 10 workers per 40-hour week — this calculator uses whichever is larger.

What the add-ons cost (national average)

ProjectLowTypicalHigh
Extra servicing visit beyond the included weekly one (per visit)$30$40$50
Handwash station — single-day event (modeled) (per station-day)$100$130$170
Handwash station — 28-day site rental (modeled) (per station-month)$160$200$270
After-hours / weekend delivery surcharge (per rental)$70$90$110
Delivery beyond the free 25-mile radius (per mile (round trip))$0$0$0
Add-ons are where quotes drift: an extra service visit per truck roll, a delivery fee once you leave the operator's free radius, and handwash stations, which operators quote by phone — the two station rows are modeled allowances, not published figures.

Frequently asked questions

How much does it cost to rent a porta potty for a month?

About $150 per 28 days for a standard unit with weekly servicing included — roughly $120–$203 depending on your market. MR JOHN prices a standard at $139 per 4 weeks, which this model's typical sits just above. A wheelchair-accessible unit runs about $300 per month in this model.

How many porta potties do I need for an event?

The planning charts rental operators publish all start the same way: one unit per 50 guests for an event up to four hours, then roughly double the count for a 4–8 hour event and again for anything longer. So a 6-hour, 100-guest party computes to 4 units here — about $1,650 with deluxe flushing units and two handwash stations at our modeled rate. If you're serving alcohol, expect the operator to raise the count — there's no published multiplier, so ask what they add — and for stations, one per 100–150 guests is FixTally's planning allowance for events with food, not a published ratio; confirm the count with your operator.

How many portable toilets does OSHA require on a construction site?

OSHA 29 CFR 1926.51(c)(1), Table J-1: one toilet for 20 or fewer employees, one toilet seat and one urinal per 40 workers from 21–200 employees, and one of each per 50 workers beyond 200. That's a legal floor, not a comfortable site — the industry's own service rule is one unit per 10 workers per 40-hour week. Our calculator uses whichever number is larger, so a 40-worker crew gets 4 units, not OSHA's 1.

Why is a one-day event rental so much more expensive than a month?

Because the truck roll dominates: one delivery, one pickup and a service visit have to be recovered inside a single day. A standard unit at a one-day event prices about $175 here, while the same unit on a 28-day rental is about $150 total — less than the day rate, which works out to roughly $5 per day. Operators discount because the unit sits on your site earning rent instead of riding a truck; it's the same reason a week on site prices close to a month (MR JOHN: $130/week, $139 per 4 weeks).

What does a luxury restroom trailer cost?

It's the widest number on this page: about $3,600 per 28 days in our model, or $1,800 for a single day — and our modeled month sits well under the real market: Oak City Restrooms publishes about $5,299 per month for a standard two-stall trailer (roughly $189 per day amortized), with four-stall units starting near $6,399. Stall count, HVAC, running water and attendants move the total more than any chart. Trailers also need power and a water source or a fill — ask the operator which one you're providing.

Are handwashing stations required?

On construction sites, effectively yes — OSHA 1926.51(f) requires washing facilities where workers handle food or are exposed to harmful substances, and it expects water, soap and towels at toilet facilities; that's why this calculator puts one station on a site rental by default. For events there is no published count rule — one station per 100–150 guests is FixTally's planning allowance — and health departments increasingly require one on permitted events with food. Stations here are priced at modeled allowances — $125 per event day, $200 per 28 days — because the cost guides we checked publish no station rate at all; confirm the figure on the operator's invoice.

How often does a porta potty get serviced?

Once a week is the standard included service on a monthly rental — pump, clean, restock paper and deodorizer. Go to twice weekly for a crew over 20, hot-weather sites or heavy concrete/masonry work, and expect to pay roughly $25–$50 per extra visit (we model $40). A one-day event shouldn't need a mid-event service unless you're running multiple days.

What extra fees show up on a porta-potty quote?

Delivery outside the operator's free radius (commonly 25 miles) at a few dollars per round-trip mile, after-hours or weekend delivery — we model an $85 surcharge because no guide we could open publishes a band for it; operators quote it per job — fuel surcharges, damage waivers, and placement fees if the driver has to move the unit twice or set it on a public right-of-way that needs a permit. Ask for the total with delivery before you compare quotes: the rental rate alone isn't the price.

How the Portable Toilet Rental estimate is calculated

Notes for the Portable Toilet Rental only — where its base prices come from, how its low–high window is derived, and what it leaves out.

  • Two billing bases, because the industry sells two products: event rentals price a single day per unit (standard $175/day delivered), and site/long-term rentals price 28-day months with weekly servicing included (standard $150/month; MR JOHN publishes $139 per 4 weeks with a $130 weekly pairing). Site rentals bill the 28-day rate from day one — a week prices at the monthly minimum, not a quarter of it — because the week and the month cost nearly the same at the operator we publish.
  • Unit classes are priced per basis rather than one multiplier: deluxe/flushing $480 per 28 days (the ~$120/week BigRentz publishes) and $350 per event day; ADA/accessible $300 per 28 days and $250 per event day (Oak City publishes ≈$250/day for a single ADA unit). Luxury restroom trailers are priced outright — $3,600 per 28 days, $1,800 per event day — and both figures are modeled low ends: Oak City publishes about $5,299/month for a standard two-stall trailer (~$189/day amortized) and from $6,399/month for four stalls. Treat the trailer line as the floor of a quote, not the quote.
  • Unit counts come from the sizing rules, not from the price. Events use 1 unit per 50 guests for the first 4 hours, doubled for 4–8 hours and again beyond 8 — this model's stated rule, which takes the conservative (more units) end of the operator planning charts, which disagree past four hours; it is a planning convention, not a regulation. Job sites use the larger of OSHA 29 CFR 1926.51(c)(1) Table J-1 and the industry's one-unit-per-10-workers-per-40-hour-week service rule; long-term placements use the industry rule alone. Luxury restroom trailers are counted at a third of those seat equivalents, because a multi-stall trailer replaces roughly three single-stall units.
  • Add-ons: handwashing stations at $125 per event day or $200 per 28 days — modeled allowances, not published rates: the cost guides cited on this page (MR JOHN, BigRentz, Oak City) publish no station rate at all, so the figure is our own and labeled as such everywhere it appears. Extra service visits are modeled at $40 each and after-hours delivery at $85 — again modeled, because no page we could open publishes either band. Delivery is free within 25 miles (our radius assumption) then $3.50 per round-trip mile, inside the $2.99–$3.99 per additional mile Oak City publishes.
  • Every estimate shows low/typical/high at 80% / 100% / 135% of the computed typical — the spread between local discount operators and national brands or high-cost metros.
  • Unit-rental and handwashing lines scale with your state's materials multiplier; delivery, servicing and after-hours lines scale with its labor multiplier. Estimates are per toilet seat — OSHA pairs a urinal with each seat for crews over 20, which this model does not price.
  • Excludes street-placement permits and right-of-way fees, generator or utility hookups for trailers, winterized/heated units, attendants and damage waivers.
