Toilet Installation Cost Calculator
A straight toilet swap is one of the few plumbing jobs with genuinely predictable pricing: a plumber pulls the old bowl, sets a new wax ring, and bolts the new one down in one to three hours. Estimates only break out of that pattern when the flange is corroded, the shut-off won't close, or the subfloor underneath turns out to be soft. This calculator prices the bowl, ring, flange and valves the way plumbers itemize them, then adjusts labor and materials for your state.
Published Cost data last reviewed Re-checked quarterly
Setting more than one bowl? Each toilet is priced the same here — parts and install time simply multiply by the count.
Comfort height (chair height) is now the best-selling style; smart bowls need an outlet within reach.
Haul-away runs $50–$200 when it isn't already folded into the install quote.
A rocking toilet or a flange below the finished floor is the tell-tale sign.
Cheapest while the tank is off — the water is already drained for the swap.
New tile or flooring often leaves the flange low; spacers and re-shimming fix that.

What this estimate assumes
- Range is 80%–135% of the computed typical — flat-rate discounts and easy closet access at the bottom; corroded shut-offs, tight alcoves and high-rate metros at the top.
- Priced for 1 bowl: comfort-height two-piece (~$300), new wax ring on a sound flange, existing supply line and shut-off reused, old bowl hauled away.
- Bowl prices sit at the middle of published bands: $100–$3,000+ for units (HomeGuide, 2026) and $200–$950 two-piece / $250–$1,100 one-piece / $750–$4,000+ smart installed totals (Fixr, 2026).
- Labor dollars scale with your state's labor rates; the bowl and hardware with its material prices; haul-away scales with labor (hauling time dominates the disposal window fee).

Frequently asked questions
How much does a plumber charge to install or replace a toilet?
A straight swap runs $224–$532 with a $372 national average per Bob Vila (HomeAdvisor/Angi data), and $250–$800 per Fixr — labor alone is $150–$440 because plumbers charge $75–$150 an hour and the job takes 1–3 hours. This calculator's basic builder-grade swap with haul-away lands at $508.
Do I need a new wax ring every time the toilet comes off the floor?
Yes — wax is single-use; once the bowl is lifted the seal is compressed and won't reseal. Rings run $5–$10 and wax-free rubber seals a bit more (HomeGuide), and every estimate here includes the ring plus fresh closet bolts and caps in an $18 kit.
When does the flange need repair or replacement?
When the bowl rocks even after the bolts are tightened, the old ring is rusted through, or new flooring leaves the flange sitting below the floor. Our spacer-ring fix adds about $85 and a full replacement about $140 — both inside HomeGuide's $85–$350 published flange range ($75–$300 of it labor at $75–$150/hr). Cutting into the subfloor pushes toward the top of that band.
Why should I replace the supply line or angle stop while the tank is off?
The water is already drained and the wrench work is already paid for — the same visit adds roughly $160 for a new braided line and quarter-turn valve, versus a separate $130–$300 service call later (HomeGuide's component-upgrade band). A corroded shut-off that won't close is also the classic mid-job surprise.
Does replacing a toilet need a permit?
A like-for-like swap on the existing flange doesn't, in most US jurisdictions. Fixr lists permits ($50–$300) only when the drain moves or the install is brand new — a true first-time rough-in runs $1,000–$3,500 and does get permitted and inspected.
Will a new toilet lower my water bill?
If the old bowl predates 1994, meaningfully: toilets installed before then flush 3.5 gallons or more per flush, while the federal maximum since 1994 is 1.6 gpf and EPA WaterSense-labeled models are certified at 1.28 gpf or less. Swapping a single pre-1994 3.5-gpf toilet for a WaterSense model saves more than 4,000 gallons a year, per the Saving Water Partnership. Replacing a post-1994 1.6-gpf toilet shrinks the savings to a couple tenths of a gallon per flush — at that point the one-piece and comfort-height upgrades are about cleaning and comfort, not the water bill.
Can I install a toilet myself?
Many homeowners do — the parts stack for a builder-grade swap is about $168 (bowl, wax ring, bolts and caps) against $508 for the professional turnkey job here, so the DIY wage works out to roughly $340 for a half-day (Bob Vila budgets 2–4 hours). The risks are the surprises, not the setting: a shut-off that won't close, a flange sitting below the floor, and one trap that bites DIYers — if the bowl rocks when you test it, lift it and start over with a fresh wax ring, because a compressed ring can't reseal and the slow seep shows up as subfloor damage months later. One-piece bowls weigh 70–120 lbs — get a second pair of hands.
Why did my quote jump once the plumber pulled the old toilet?
Because that's when hidden damage shows. Rotted subfloor runs $3–$10 per sq ft installed, damaged bathroom flooring $8–$24 per sq ft, and a full-bathroom subfloor rebuild with joist work can reach $2,000–$5,000 (2025–2026 remodeling data). Ask for the flange and valve work quoted separately from any structural repair so the bids stay comparable.

Open calculatorHow this estimate is calculated
These notes are written for this tool alone: where its base prices come from, how the low–high window is derived, and what the figure deliberately leaves out.
- Inputs mirror how plumbers bid the job: bowl tier, pull-and-haul of the old fixture, flange condition (new ring / spacer ring / full replacement), supply line and angle stop, and whether the bowl is being reset onto new flooring.
- Base rates are 2025–2026 national data: $224–$532 typical with a $372 average (Bob Vila, citing HomeAdvisor/Angi), $250–$800 typical with a $450 average and $150–$440 of labor (Fixr, 2026), and $350–$800 for bowl plus installation (HomeGuide, 2026).
- The bowl is priced at $150 builder / $300 comfort-height / $450 one-piece / $1,200 entry smart — the middle of HomeGuide's $100–$3,000+ unit range and Fixr's per-type installed bands.
- Flange work follows HomeGuide's published flange pricing ($85–$350 installed, $75–$300 of it labor): about $85 for a spacer-ring fix and $140 for a full replacement in this model; supply line plus quarter-turn angle stop lands inside HomeGuide's $130–$300 component-upgrade band.
- Every estimate shows low/typical/high at 80% / 100% / 135% of the computed typical — flat-rate discounts at the bottom; tight alcoves, corroded valves and high-rate metros at the top.
- Labor lines (installation, flange, valves, haul-away) scale with your state's labor multiplier; the bowl, ring kit, flange parts and supply hardware scale with its materials multiplier. Haul-away is labor-scaled because hauling time dominates the disposal window fee.
- Excludes new drain rough-ins ($1,000–$3,500 per Fixr), moving the flange, wall-hung carrier frames, subfloor or joist repair, bidet-seat electrical, and permits ($50–$300 where a relocation triggers them) — each is itemized in the FAQ with its source range.
