Cabinet Cost Calculator

Cabinet quotes swing by a factor of ten because suppliers sell three different products under one word: flat-pack stock boxes, semi-custom lines sized to your walls, and built-to-order custom work. This calculator prices all three per linear foot, alongside the two escape hatches — RTA boxes you assemble and refacing the boxes you already own — then adds the lines quotes forget: hardware, soft-close glides, crown, and hauling the old cabinets away. Measure your run where the cabinets will sit, not the room's perimeter.

Combined base + wall cabinets along the wall — the average kitchen is about 24 linear ft.

Refacing keeps your boxes and layout; new and RTA replace everything.

Not used for refacing — your existing boxes set the grade.

Plywood sides are the upgrade worth buying in sinks and dishwashers bays.

Solid wood runs 25%–150% over MDF and thermofoil (HomeGuide); this uses the 25% low end.

About 3 pieces per linear ft of cabinetry.

About $35 per linear ft; the single most noticeable daily-use upgrade.

DIY removes all labor; hanging wall boxes is a two-person job.

Not applicable to refacing. Includes dumpster or haul-away fees.

Usually matches your cabinet run; set to 0 for a slab-modern look.

What this estimate assumes

  • Range is 80%–135% of the computed typical — the spread between competitive bids and high-cost metros, out-of-level walls or upgrades at install time.
  • Priced for 24 linear ft of cabinetry — the average kitchen runs about 24 linear ft of base + wall cabinets (HomeAdvisor).
  • Removal & haul-away scales with labor rates (crew time plus dump fees).
  • Material lines scale with your state's materials multiplier; labor and removal lines with its labor multiplier (see the regional note under the results).

Frequently asked questions

How much do kitchen cabinets cost for an average kitchen?

A 24-linear-ft kitchen — HomeAdvisor's average — prices out around $7,092 in stock grade, $11,748 in semi-custom, and $22,224 in custom, professionally installed with mid-range hardware, soft-close glides, crown and haul-away of the old boxes. HomeGuide's published replacement range for a stock or semi-custom kitchen is $4,500–$15,000, and $15,000–$30,000 for custom.

Is refacing worth it instead of buying new cabinets?

Refacing the same kitchen runs about $8,748 versus $11,748 for new semi-custom — roughly a quarter off — and the kitchen stays usable the whole time. It only makes sense when the existing boxes are square, dry and solid plywood or furniture board you actually like, and the layout stays put. Water-swollen or sagging boxes have to go.

Are RTA cabinets actually cheaper, and are they any good?

Yes on price: self-assembled RTA boxes land near $6,444 for this kitchen — about half the installed semi-custom number — because you absorb the assembly labor on boxes that already ship at a discount. Quality is all over the map, so buy on specs: plywood sides, dovetail drawers, blended-hardwood doors and full-extension soft-close glides, not just the per-linear-foot sticker.

What does a 'linear foot' of cabinets include?

One linear foot is a foot of run combining base cabinets below with wall cabinets above, measured along the wall — so a 10-ft run of base plus a 10-ft run of wall counts as 10 linear ft, not 20. Suppliers quote per-linear-foot rates on that combined run; an average kitchen is about 24 linear ft including an island if you have one.

Why does cabinet installation labor cost so much?

HomeAdvisor pegs hanging labor at $50–$450 per linear foot because installers level every box against out-of-plumb walls, scribe fillers, shim, and align doors and drawers so reveals are even — slow, unforgiving work that shows forever if rushed. Labor is about 40% of this model's installed price; HomeGuide puts all-in labor at 60%–80% once demo and haul-away are counted.

Do I need a permit to replace my kitchen cabinets?

A like-for-like cabinet swap needs no permit anywhere in the US — same boxes, same sink location, nothing electrical touched. Pull one once the scope moves the sink or a gas range, adds circuits or lighting, or removes a wall; the one that surprises DIY installers is that anything hardwired — a disguised refrigerator, above-cabinet lighting — or any relocated receptacle inside the new run counts as electrical work of its own. HomeGuide pegs kitchen-remodel permits at $500–$1,500, and your contractor usually pulls it for you.

What is not included in this estimate?

Countertops, sink, appliances, backsplash, lighting, floor repair, moving plumbing or electrical, and drywall patching behind removed cabinets (HomeAdvisor prices that patching at $300–$900). Designer pulls can exceed this model's $30/piece top tier — high-end hardware runs up to $200 a piece installed.

How long does a cabinet project take?

Delivery is the long pole: stock cabinets typically arrive in 1–2 weeks, semi-custom in 4–8, and custom in 8–12 or more — the whole project queues behind that order, so get the lead time in writing before demo day. Once boxes are on site, a two-person crew usually hangs an average kitchen in 2–4 days: base boxes first, then wall boxes, then a full pass leveling doors and aligning reveals. The sequence matters downstream — countertop templating happens only after the cabinets are set and leveled, so cabinets and counters run back-to-back, not in parallel. Refacing runs 2–4 days with no countertop or appliance disconnection at all.

How this estimate is calculated

These notes are written for this tool alone: where its base prices come from, how the low–high window is derived, and what the figure deliberately leaves out.

  • Sizing input is linear feet of combined base + wall cabinet run; HomeAdvisor puts an average kitchen at 24 linear ft, and the calculator defaults there.
  • Installed base rates are 2025–2026 national data: stock $100–$300, semi-custom $150–$650, custom $500–$1,200 per linear ft (HomeAdvisor's 2025 guide, corroborated by HomeGuide and CabinetsCity) → typicals of $200/$400/$850 per lf. Refacing uses $285/lf inside HomeGuide's $150–$450 band.
  • The installed price splits roughly 60% materials / 40% labor — the middle of HomeAdvisor's $50–$450/lf hanging-labor band at every grade; HomeGuide's 60–80% labor share for full remodels sits above it because that includes demo and haul-away, which this calculator prices as its own line.
  • Door-style factors apply the 25% low end of HomeGuide's 25–150% solid-wood premium to the door-and-drawer-front half of materials; plywood boxes add 10%; RTA boxes are modeled at 75% of assembled retail materials (RTA market pricing runs $100–$300/lf per 2026 retailer guides — there is no single RTA price index, so this is a flagged modeling assumption).
  • Hardware prices ~3 pulls per linear ft at $4/$12/$30 (HomeGuide: $6–$60 per piece installed); the soft-close package adds $35/lf; crown & light rail $2.50/lf materials (HomeAdvisor: $2–$3/lf) + $6/lf labor; removal & haul-away $22/lf (HomeAdvisor: $350–$800 per job).
  • Every estimate shows low/typical/high at 80% / 100% / 135% of the computed typical. Labor and removal lines scale with your state's labor multiplier; material lines with its materials multiplier.
  • Excludes countertops, sinks, appliances, plumbing/electrical relocation, floor and drywall repair ($300–$900 per HomeAdvisor), and permits ($500–$1,500 when scope triggers one, per HomeGuide).
