Kitchens & Baths

Kitchens and baths concentrate the house's most expensive trades — plumbing, electrical, tile, cabinetry — into its smallest rooms, so a handful of square feet can swing a budget harder than a whole bedroom. The biggest cost drivers in 2026 are scope decisions rather than finishes: relocating a drain line, converting a tub to a walk-in shower, or removing a wall adds entire subsystems to a quote, while cabinet grade and countertop material set the ceiling for everything else. Labor still runs roughly half of most remodel budgets, and state-by-state wage gaps push identical plans thousands of dollars apart. The calculators below itemize materials, labor, permits and disposal separately, so you can see exactly which decision is moving your number.

Kitchens & baths: common questions

What does a typical kitchen or bathroom remodel cost?

At national-average default inputs, our kitchen remodel calculator lands at $28,500 ($21,803–$41,824), and the bathroom remodel calculator at $13,550 ($10,100–$19,350). Treat both as planning ranges: your state's labor rates, the room's size class, and the scope options you switch on move them substantially.

Which decision moves the price most — finish level or layout?

Layout. Keeping the sink, range and fixtures where they are skips plumbing and gas-line relocation entirely, and leaving walls standing skips structural work — each of those adds a whole trade's line items to a quote. Finish grade (cabinet construction, countertop material, tile pattern) sets the ceiling on top of that, which is why the calculators ask about scope before they ask about style.

Should I price the whole room at once or each project separately?

If you're replacing more than one system — say cabinets and counters together — start with the whole-room calculator: bundled work shares demo, haul-away, permits and trade mobilization, so the parts rarely add up to the bundle. Use the single-project tools (countertops, cabinets, backsplash, bathtub refinishing) for standalone upgrades, then compare the sum of the parts against the full-remodel number before committing to a sequence.

How close are these numbers to a real contractor quote?

Close enough to budget with, not close enough to hire on. Each range is computed from published 2025–2026 national cost data, itemized into materials, labor, permits and disposal, then scaled by your state's labor and materials multipliers when you set a location. Every tool page lists its sources and methodology; for a hireable number, take the itemized breakdown each results panel prints and collect written quotes from licensed contractors.
