Interior Finishes
Interior finish budgets in 2026 are decided less by the finish you pick than by what the crew finds on the way to it — drywall to patch, subfloors to level, air leaks that should have been sealed before the insulation went in. Labor remains the larger half of most of these quotes, and finish-trades wages have kept rising faster than material prices this year. The calculators below price each trade the way its own contractors bid it — board area, coats, wear-layer, finish level, R-value — then adjust labor and materials separately for your state. Set the inputs to your real rooms and the low–typical–high range that comes back is the one to hold bids against.

Interior finish costs side by side
Every range is computed from that calculator's default inputs at national-average labor and material rates. Open any tool to set your state, sizes and materials for a localized, itemized estimate.
| Calculator | Typical range (default inputs) | When to use it |
|---|---|---|
| Attic Insulation Cost Calculator | $1,510 – $2,550 | Topping up the attic by depth — enter the inches you have and the R-value you want; air sealing and soffit baffles included. |
| Drywall Cost Calculator | $3,210 – $5,420 | New board, repairs and ceilings — hang, tape and finish levels 0–5, moisture-resistant and soundproof board, tear-out included. |
| Hardwood Flooring Cost Calculator | $6,290 – $10,610 | Solid or engineered plank — species, site-finished vs prefinished, nail/glue/float install, plus a refinish-your-existing-floor mode. |
| Insulation Cost Calculator | $1,600 – $2,710 | Walls, crawlspaces and basements — batt, blown or spray foam sized to a target R-value, with air sealing priced separately. |
| LVP Flooring Cost Calculator | $3,040 – $5,130 | Waterproof plank over an existing subfloor — wear-layer tier, underlayment, old-floor demo and stair coverage priced in. |
| Paint Cost Calculator | $2,880 – $4,870 | Repainting occupied rooms — compares per-room and per-square-foot pricing across coats, primer, trim footage and patching. |
| Stairs & Railing Cost Calculator | $3,210 – $5,420 | Rebuilt flights or new rail runs — wood, iron, cable and glass systems, with the code checks inspectors actually make. |
| Tile Installation Cost Calculator | $2,560 – $4,380 | Floors, walls and showers in ceramic, porcelain or stone — pattern complexity, substrate prep and waterproofing drive the labor line. |
Interior finishes cost questions
- What do the ranges in the comparison table include?
- Each figure is the linked calculator run at its default inputs with national-average labor and material rates. Materials and installation labor are itemized inside every tool, and permit or disposal lines appear where the trade actually charges them.
- Why is the same interior project quoted so differently by contractors?
- Prep and repair work hides the spread: patching drywall, leveling subfloors, sealing air leaks before insulation, or stepping up a finish level can move the labor line sharply without changing the room's size. The calculators expose those inputs explicitly, so you can see which ones a bid includes and which it quietly leaves out.
- Which order should interior finish projects go in?
- Work inside-out and dirty-first: insulation and air sealing before drywall, drywall and paint before flooring, and stairs last so finished treads survive the other trades. In wet areas, tile backer and waterproofing go in before wall finishing for the same reason.
- Will my state's prices match these national ranges?
- Often not — finish-trades labor moves regionally far more than material prices do. Open any calculator and pick your state: every line re-prices at that state's labor and material multipliers, and the low-to-high spread widens or narrows with it.
