Gutter Cost Calculator

Gutters are priced by the linear foot, but two houses with the same footage rarely get the same quote — material, trough size, downspout count and ladder height all move the number. This calculator builds the estimate the way an installer does: run length by material, then downspouts, guards and a story premium on top. Every result is adjusted for labor and material rates in your state before you hold it against a bid.

Measure along the fascia; most single-family homes need 100–250 ft.

Aluminum is the US default; vinyl cracks in cold climates, steel shrugs off ladders and hail.

6-inch carries roughly 40% more water; step up if 5-inch overflows in downpours.

One per 30–40 ft of gutter; $85 each installed with elbows and straps.

Cuts cleaning frequency; pays back fastest on tall or hard-to-ladder roofs.

Each story above the first adds $2 per linear ft of ladder and staging labor.

What this estimate assumes

  • Range is 80%–135% of the computed typical — the spread between competitive bids and high-cost metros, complex rooflines or heavy fascia prep.
  • Pricing 150 linear feet of seamless aluminum gutter in 5-inch K-style with 4 downspouts on a single-story home.
  • Downspouts run $85 each installed; one per 30–40 ft of gutter is the rule of thumb, so your count is reasonable when linear ft ÷ downspouts lands in that band.
  • Labor dollars scale with your state's labor rates; gutter, downspout and guard materials with its material prices (see the regional note under the results).
  • Not included: tear-off and disposal of old gutters ($1–$2 per linear ft), fascia or soffit rot repair ($9–$34 per linear ft), underground drainage, and permits — gutter replacement rarely requires one.

Frequently asked questions

How much does it cost to install gutters on a typical house?

About $1,690 for 150 linear ft of seamless aluminum in 5-inch K-style with four downspouts on a single story ($1,352–$2,282). The model builds it from $9.00 per installed ft of run ($1,350) plus $85 per downspout ($340) — so when a bid lands far off, you can usually tell whether it's the material, the footage or the downspout count driving it. That total brackets HomeGuide's published $750–$2,300 to replace 150 ft and Fixr's $1,582 national average for the same run in galvanized steel.

Are seamless gutters worth more than sectional gutters?

For a hired installer, yes. Seamless runs $6–$20 per ft installed vs $5–$15 for sectional (HomeGuide), because a truck rolls one continuous piece on site — no joints to leak except at corners and downspouts. Sectional makes sense for short DIY runs on sheds and garages; on a live roofline every seam is a future drip stain.

How many downspouts does my house need?

One per 30–40 linear ft of gutter (HomeGuide's rule) — a 150-ft run wants about four. Each one adds $85 installed in this estimate, so dropping from four to three "saves" $85 — the cheapest place in the whole quote to lose real capacity. Skimping on downspouts is the most common false economy in gutter quotes: the trough is fine but water still overflows in a downpour, and overflow is what rots fascia and undermines foundations — repairs that cost multiples of the downspout that would have prevented them.

Are gutter guards worth the extra cost?

Bolt-on screen or micro-mesh guards add $1,200 on this 150-ft job — inside HomeGuide's $4–$12 per ft guard range and Fixr's $1,200–$2,000 whole-home quotes. Professional cleaning averages $190/yr (Fixr), so guards that eliminate cleanings pay back in about 6 years. They reduce cleaning frequency rather than eliminate it — fine shingle grit still gets through — so they pay best over tall or hard-to-ladder roofs.

What is not included in this estimate?

Tear-off, haul-away and disposal of the old gutters (add $1–$2 per linear ft per HomeGuide; Fixr puts it at $0.65–$0.85), rotted fascia or soffit repair ($9–$34 per linear ft), downspout extensions or underground drain tie-ins, heat tape for ice dams ($550–$650 per Fixr), and permits — gutter replacement rarely requires one.

Should I get 5-inch or 6-inch gutters?

Five-inch K-style is the default on most US homes. Step up to 6-inch when the roof is large or steep, the climate dumps heavy rain, or the current gutters overflow — it moves ~40% more water for about 10% more money in this model (materials +15%, labor +5%). Only oversized 7–8-inch systems, rarely residential, reach the 'up to 2× a standard gutter' premium HomeGuide notes.

How long does gutter installation take?

HomeGuide clocks a 150-ft job at 7–10 hours solo or 3.5–5 hours for a two-person crew. Seamless crews are faster per job because the truck extrudes the run to exact length; most whole-house installs are done in one day, then downspouts and cleanup take the last hour.

Are copper gutters worth three times the price?

Copper on this house runs $4,690 vs $1,690 for aluminum — $3,000 more. The case is longevity and appearance: copper can outlast two or three aluminum systems (which last ~20–25 years) and never needs painting, so it pencils out mostly on high-end and historic homes where the look adds resale value. For everyone else, aluminum with a good finish is the value pick.

How this estimate is calculated

These notes are written for this tool alone: where its base prices come from, how the low–high window is derived, and what the figure deliberately leaves out.

  • Measure the run in linear feet along the roofline — walk the fascia with a tape or read the exterior dimensions off your floor plan; the calculator clamps inputs to 40–600 ft.
  • Base rates are 2025 national data: HomeGuide's gutter installation guide ($5–$15 per linear ft installed including downspouts; $750–$2,300 to replace 150 ft) blended with Fixr's seamless-gutter tables (vinyl $6–$11, galvanized steel $12–$20, aluminum $14–$20, copper $29–$40 installed).
  • Material is priced as materials + hanging labor per linear ft: vinyl $5.50, aluminum $9.00, galvanized steel $13.00, copper $29.00 — each inside the published ranges above, with Fixr skewing toward metro seamless-crew pricing and HomeGuide including sectional work.
  • Downspouts add $85 each in pipe, elbows, straps and hanging labor; HomeGuide recommends one per 30–40 ft. A 6-inch K-style adds about 10% on the run (materials +15%, labor +5%), and each story above the first adds $2.00 per linear ft of ladder labor (HomeGuide: $1–$3 per additional story).
  • Gutter guards add $8.00 per linear ft installed — the middle of HomeGuide's $4–$12 guard range and consistent with Fixr's $1,200–$2,000 whole-home guard quotes.
  • Estimates show low/typical/high at 80% / 100% / 135% of the computed total; labor lines scale with your state's labor multiplier, material lines with its materials multiplier.
  • Excludes tear-off and disposal of old gutters ($1–$2 per ft per HomeGuide; $0.65–$0.85 per Fixr), fascia/soffit rot repair ($9–$34 per ft), heat tape, underground drainage, and permits — rarely required for gutter replacement.
