Patio Door Cost Calculator

Patio doors are priced as a door unit plus installation, and the unit price is driven more by panel count than by brand — a 6-foot vinyl slider and a 12-foot four-panel multi-slide can differ five-fold before labor. This calculator prices the door, the glass package and the install scope the way door contractors quote them, then adjusts labor and materials separately for your state. Widening an opening is the real cost cliff: framing a new one adds thousands, not hundreds.

Bifolds need a level multi-track sill; French doors need clear swing space inside and out.

Measure the existing rough opening; 6 ft is by far the most common size.

Vinyl and aluminum dominate replacement sales; wood and fiberglass are the upgrade paths.

Impact glass is required by code in parts of FL, TX, LA, NC and SC coastal counties.

Most replacements are same-size swaps; new openings add framing labor and permits.

What this estimate assumes

  • Range is 80%–135% of the computed typical — the spread between straightforward bids and high-cost metros, odd-sized openings or out-of-level walls.
  • Width is priced as 6 ft (72") — standard 2 panels: the door unit scales with panel count, and labor climbs at roughly half that rate.
  • Door unit and glass dollars scale with your state's material prices; installation, scope work and disposal scale with its labor rates (see the regional note under the results).
  • Scope assumes a ground-floor wall at slab level with a sound opening — rot repair, sill/threshold rebuilds and interior trim are extra.

Frequently asked questions

How much does it cost to install a sliding patio door?

A standard 6-ft vinyl slider swapped into the existing opening runs about $1,795 installed nationally — inside Bob Vila's $1,000–$3,000 sliding-door range and just below Fixr's $2,000–$4,000 band, which is weighted toward aluminum and premium installs. Trade up to fiberglass and you're at roughly $2,935.

Which costs more — sliding, French, or bifold patio doors?

At the same 6-ft vinyl opening, French (hinged) doors run about $2,420 installed versus $1,795 for a slider — the second leaf, hinges and alignment add labor. Bifolds jump to roughly $6,121 even at 8 ft, because multi-track sills and panel hardware dominate the unit price.

Why does width change the price so much?

Patio doors are priced per panel, not per door: materials scale almost linearly from a 5-ft two-panel (×0.85 of a 6-ft) to a 16-ft multi-slide (×2.9), while labor climbs at about half that rate. Widening the opening itself — new header, structural check, siding and drywall work — is a separate five-figure-adjacent project, which is why most replacements stay in the existing rough opening.

Are triple-pane or impact-rated glass worth the upgrade?

Triple-pane adds about $700 on a 6-ft door and pays back mainly in cold climates and on north-facing exposures; impact/hurricane glass adds roughly $1,200 and is code-required in parts of the coastal Southeast and Gulf. Both also cut noise noticeably — often the reason owners say the upgrade was worth it. On the spec sheet, read the NFRC label rather than the brochure: a lower U-factor insulates better (cold climates), a lower SHGC blocks solar heat gain (sun-belt exposures), and a patio door — mostly glass by area — moves far more heat through those two numbers than a window does.

How long does a patio door installation take — and can I DIY it?

A like-for-like swap is a half-day job: Fixr budgets about 7 labor-hours at $65–$85/hr and Bob Vila's guide says 3–5 hours at $70–$120/hr. A full-frame replacement with new flashing and trim runs most of a day; cutting a new wall opening is a 2–3 day job once framing, inspection and patching are counted. The same split defines DIY: a same-size swap is a realistic two-person weekend job — level sill pan, flashing tape on the rough opening, shims, fasteners, low-expansion foam — while full-frame work and anything touching the header moves structural loads and belongs with a licensed installer.

Do I need a permit to install a patio door?

Replacing a door in its existing opening usually needs no permit. Cutting a new opening or widening one almost always does — the wall above a patio door carries header loads, and many jurisdictions want a structural detail or engineer's letter with the application. Expect the permit itself to be a few hundred dollars on top of the roughly $3,200 of framing labor this calculator adds for a new opening.

Can I repair my sliding patio door instead of replacing it?

If the glass is clear and the frame is solid, yes — sticky sliders are usually worn rollers or a dirty track, a repair Bob Vila pegs in the $100–$500 DIY territory versus $1,436+ for a new installed door. Replace when you see fogging between the panes (failed seal), rot in the sill, or a warped frame — those never get cheaper to defer.

How this estimate is calculated

These notes are written for this tool alone: where its base prices come from, how the low–high window is derived, and what the figure deliberately leaves out.

  • The model prices three lines: the door unit (type × material × width × glass), installation labor (type + scope, width-adjusted at about half the materials rate), and old-door disposal.
  • Primary anchors are Fixr's sliding patio door guide (updated Jan 31, 2025; accessed Sep 2026): $2,756 national average and $2,000–$4,000 installed for a 72"×80" door, materials-only tables by frame and glazing, $65–$85/hr labor for ~7 hours, $100–$150 removal, and $1,500–$5,000 to frame a new opening.
  • Second anchor is Bob Vila's patio door replacement guide (accessed Sep 2026): $2,500 average and $1,550–$6,250 all-in, sliding $1,000–$3,000, French $400–$4,000, bifold $3,000–$10,000, labor $70–$120/hr for 3–5 hours. Where the two sources disagree (Fixr runs high), the model sits between them.
  • Door-unit calibration: sliding/vinyl at 6 ft lands near $1,020 — the top of Bob Vila's door-only range ($300–$1,200) and above Fixr's slab-only materials table ($300–$700), because the sold unit carries track, jamb and hardware; the default job (unit + install + disposal) computes to ≈ $1,795 installed, inside Bob Vila's $1,000–$3,000 sliding band, just under Fixr's $2,000–$4,000, and above Homewyse's $997–$1,526 basic-install figure, which covers a budget door without disposal or trim — then scales by width (×0.85 at 5 ft to ×2.9 at 16 ft, per Fixr's panel-count pricing).
  • Every estimate shows low/typical/high at 80% / 100% / 135% of the computed typical — competitive-bid floor to high-cost-metro ceiling; itemized lines sum to the totals.
  • Door-unit and glass dollars scale with your state's materials multiplier; installation, scope framing and disposal scale with its labor multiplier.
  • Excludes permits and structural engineering for new openings, interior drywall and exterior siding repair, blinds-between-glass, screens, deck or step work at the threshold, and rot remediation discovered mid-job.
