Backsplash Cost Calculator

A typical kitchen backsplash is only 30 square feet of tile — 18 inches tall behind a 20-foot counter run — yet bids still swing from $600 to $2,500 depending on the tile, the layout and how much electrical work hides behind the outlets. This calculator prices the job the way a tile setter does: area times material, a pattern premium on labor, plus the outlet relocations, edge trim and grout sealing that line-item quotes bill separately. Set your state and labor and material prices move together with local rates.

Width × 1.5 ft for an 18-in band. The average kitchen run behind counters is about 30 sq ft.

Priced as tile; a full-height quartz or granite slab backsplash is a countertop quote, not this.

Small pieces mean many more joints — Fixr prices them near double the sheet-set rate.

Non-straight layouts add 10–20% to the tile bill; herringbone is the biggest labor lift.

Electrician work at ~$200 each (Angi: $75–$485 per outlet). Count every box behind the tile.

Exposed vertical edges at counter ends and open runs — about 3 linear ft per exposed end.

Cement grout near a cooktop should be sealed at install and refreshed about yearly.

Removal runs $1–$3 per sq ft; expect some drywall touch-up before the new tile goes on.

What this estimate assumes

  • Range is 80%–135% of the computed typical — the spread between competitive bids and high-cost metros, out-of-square walls or intricate cuts.
  • 30 sq ft is about 33 sq ft of tile to buy once 10% cutting waste is added — order a spare partial box for future repairs either way.
  • Tile, thinset and trim profiles scale with your state's material prices; installation, electrician, sealing and removal labor scale with its labor rates (see the regional note under the results).

Frequently asked questions

How much does it cost to install a kitchen backsplash?

About $1,076 for the standard job: 30 sq ft of ceramic subway tile in an offset bond, two outlets relocated, 6 linear ft of edge trim, installed. Fixr's 2025 guide puts typical projects at $500–$1,500 with a ~$1,000 kitchen average; Bob Vila's HomeAdvisor-based figures run $592–$1,317. Glass, stone and mosaic push the same wall past $1,500.

How much more does a herringbone backsplash cost?

On the 30 sq ft ceramic reference job, herringbone prices at $1,160 versus $1,061 stacked — about 9% more overall, because labor rises ~25% and cutting waste grows from 10% to 20% of the tile. Fixr pegs non-straight layouts at +10–20% of the tile bill, and installers quote intricate patterns at up to $100/hour.

Do I need to move the outlets and switches before tiling?

Only if a box genuinely changes location — that's electrician work at $75–$485 per outlet (Angi's range; we model $200) and it should happen before the tile goes up so the wall gets patched and waterproofed first. If the box just sits proud of the new tile, an electrician or handyman extends it to the new face for roughly $10–$25 in parts. It adds up fast: the two moves on the reference job are $400 — about 37% of the $1,076 estimate and its single biggest line — so count every box behind the backsplash before you accept a flat quote.

How many square feet of tile do I need for a 30 sq ft backsplash?

Buy 33 sq ft (one extra box) for a stacked or running-bond layout, 35 sq ft for diagonal, and 36 sq ft for herringbone — the waste bands match the tile-takeoff tool. Tile is sold by the piece and box, so round up; dye lots change between production runs, which is why leftovers are worth keeping.

Can I install a backsplash myself to save money?

Tile-setting labor is about 33% of the reference job — roughly $351 — so DIY saves real money. Ceramic and porcelain over a sound, painted wall are the classic first-tile projects; glass mosaic, natural stone and anything needing mitred trim cut corners are where DIY jobs go visibly wrong. The electrician's part of the bill doesn't go away unless no boxes move.

Does a backsplash need grout sealing, and what does it cost?

Cement grout behind a cooktop is grease- and moisture-hungry — seal it at installation and again every year or so; epoxy grout and most premixed formulations never need it. A pro application on a backsplash-sized wall runs our $90 service minimum (sealing-only outfits rarely come out cheaper); a $10–$20 bottle of penetrating sealer and 20 minutes covers it yourself. Stone tile also wants its own face sealer.

How long does it take, and do I need a permit?

The hours back the one-day claim: the model carries $351 of tile-setting labor on the 30 sq ft reference run, which at the sourced $40–$60 per hour setter rate is roughly 6–9 hours on the wall — setting in the morning, grout by afternoon, with a second trip for caulk cure or sealing. No permit is required to re-tile a wall in nearly every jurisdiction, but relocating outlets is licensed-electrician work, and some cities want a permit for the electrical work itself.

How this estimate is calculated

These notes are written for this tool alone: where its base prices come from, how the low–high window is derived, and what the figure deliberately leaves out.

  • Inputs are the wall area, tile family and format, layout pattern, outlet/switch relocations, edge-trim linear footage, grout sealing, and whether an old backsplash comes out.
  • Base rates are 2025–2026 published installed prices: Fixr's August 2025 guide (ceramic $12–$30/sq ft, porcelain $13–$35, glass $18–$43, travertine $13–$40, marble $30–$150, all-material average ~$25/sq ft, labor 30–70% of the job) and Bob Vila's HomeAdvisor/Angi-based figures ($592–$1,317 total, ~$1,000 average, setter labor $40–$60/hr or ~$10/sq ft over materials).
  • The model splits those installed rates into a tile-material line ($8–$45/sq ft by family) and a $10/sq ft base install labor scaled by material cutting difficulty (×1.0–1.2), tile format (×1.0 mosaic sheets to ×1.5 small-format) and pattern (×1.0 straight to ×1.25 herringbone).
  • Cutting waste follows the same bands as our tile-takeoff tool: 10% straight or offset, 15% diagonal, 20% herringbone; Fixr's +10–20% premium for non-straight layouts shows up as the pattern labor factor.
  • Outlet relocation is priced at $200 each — inside Angi's published $75–$485 per outlet for an electrician. Setting supplies ($25 + $0.60/sq ft), edge trim ($9/linear ft), pro grout sealing ($1.25/sq ft, $90 minimum) and tear-out ($2/sq ft, from Bob Vila's $1–$3) are derived from those same installed ranges and labor rates; no standalone published figure exists for each, so treat them as model assumptions.
  • Estimates show low/typical/high at 80% / 100% / 135% of the computed typical. Tile, thinset and trim profiles scale with your state's materials multiplier; installation, electrician, sealing and removal labor scale with its labor multiplier.
  • Excludes countertop replacement, drywall repair beyond patching at relocated boxes, full-height slab (quartz/granite) backsplashes, under-cabinet lighting and outlet-faceplate upgrades.
