Countertop Material Comparison Calculator
Sticker price is the worst way to pick a countertop: granite looks affordable until the fourth reseal bill, marble's care tab rivals its install cost, and laminate's low quote hides a mid-life replacement. This calculator prices all five materials the way you'll actually own them — installed today, then every seal, honing, oiling and replacement for 15 years — with labor and slab prices adjusted for your state. Pick the material you're leaning toward for an itemized breakdown; the tables below carry the full head-to-head.

Length along the wall plus island — most kitchens have 14–19 linear ft.
Sets the itemized breakdown; the tables and assumptions always compare all five.
Priced the same on every material, so it never changes the ranking.
Tear-out is material-independent — add it to every column equally.

What this estimate assumes
- Basis: 18 linear ft at the standard 25.5" depth ≈ 38 sq ft, 1 sink cutout, counters already out, stone care hired out — a 15-year ownership horizon.
- Head-to-head at these inputs (installed → 15-year total): Laminate $1,737 → $3,473; Butcher block $3,184 → $3,544; Granite $4,189 → $5,883; Quartz $4,117 → $4,117; Marble $4,375 → $9,919. Quartz — your pick — lands $644 above Laminate, the cheapest to own here.
- Quartz care: non-porous, never sealed — zero care dollars in the 15-year horizon. Just keep hot pans off it; resin can scorch and that damage doesn't polish out.
- Range is 80%–135% of the computed 15-year total — quote spread on the install plus how much sealing, oiling and wear actually happens where you cook.
- Slab, sealer, oil and DIY kits scale with your state's materials multiplier; fabrication, cutouts, tear-out, hired-out treatments and honing with its labor multiplier. Future care is priced in today's dollars so materials stay comparable.
- Excluded: faucet and sink themselves, plumbing disconnect/reconnect, decorative edge upgrades (they add the same $10–$60 per linear ft to every material, so they don't change the ranking), full-height tile splash, and cabinet reinforcement for heavy stone.

Frequently asked questions
Is quartz worth the extra cost over granite?
On the 18-linear-ft reference kitchen, quartz's blended $110/sq ft runs about $5/sq ft above granite — but granite carries a required install-time penetrating sealer (~$275), which leaves the two install bills within about $84 of each other at this size. The real separation is ownership: granite adds roughly $1,925 of resealing over 15 years when it's hired out, while quartz needs nothing — leaving quartz about $2,009 cheaper to own. Reseal yourself and granite closes most of that gap.
How often does granite really need sealing, and what does it cost?
Test it with water drops every 6 months: if the stone darkens within 10–15 minutes, the seal is gone. Fox Granite's 2026 guide puts reseal intervals at 6–12 months for light porous stone, 1–2 years for medium tones and 2–3+ for dark dense granite, with professional resealing at $200–$420 per kitchen and DIY kits at $25–$65. This model reseals every 2 years — 7 treatments over 15 years.
Why is marble so expensive to own if it costs about the same as quartz installed?
Both run ≈ $4,683 installed here, but marble is calcite: lemon juice, wine and vinegar etch the polish, and it's porous enough to want sealing every year. That's 12 reseals plus 3 professional honing visits (Rose Restoration quotes $500–$1,500 per countertop to re-hone and re-polish, sealing included) — about $6,300 of care, roughly $6,575 more than quartz over 15 years. Skip the honing and live with the etch marks and the math tightens — that's a lifestyle choice, not a cost saving.
Do laminate countertops really need replacing within 15 years?
The most commonly cited lifespan is 10–15 years — seams swell where water sits, burns and scratches don't repair — though gentle owners stretch them to 20. Fixr's 2026 guide says it plainly: cheaper materials may need replacement sooner. This model budgets one full replacement around year 12, which is why laminate's 15-year total (about $3,766) lands near butcher block and quartz territory. If your laminate is holding up at year 15, subtract the ~$1,883 line and it's unbeatable.
How much upkeep does a butcher block counter actually take?
Food-safe mineral oil wiped on about monthly — roughly $25 a year, $375 over the horizon here. Cut marks and stains sand out with ordinary sandpaper and a re-oiling, which is why no professional budget is modeled. The trade-off against its modest ~$3,826 15-year total: it's the only option here that can't handle a wet glass left overnight or a pan off the stove.
Does quartz really need zero maintenance?
Yes — engineered quartz is non-porous, so no sealing, ever; that's the whole reason its care line is $0 in this model. Two cautions: resin binds the stone, so a hot pan can scorch it permanently (trivets are cheap), and direct sun can discolor it — a reason some owners still pick granite for sun-drenched kitchens despite the sealing schedule. There's also a repair asymmetry: a chipped granite corner can usually be re-bonded with color-matched epoxy, while quartz chips and gouges are hard to make invisible — worth knowing before a hard-use kitchen commits to it.
What is not included in these 15-year numbers?
The sink and faucet themselves, plumbing disconnect/reconnect, decorative edge profiles (they add the same $10–$60 per linear foot to every material, so they don't change the ranking), full-height tile or slab splash, cabinet reinforcement for heavy stone, disposal of the old top unless you toggle it, and inflation — future care is priced in today's dollars, which is the honest way to compare materials against each other. Seams are material-independent too: slabs come off the bed in fixed sizes, so a run longer than roughly nine feet needs a seam whether it's granite, quartz or marble — your layout, not the material, decides where.

Open calculatorHow this estimate is calculated
These notes are written for this tool alone: where its base prices come from, how the low–high window is derived, and what the figure deliberately leaves out.
- Inputs: the run in linear feet (area = length × the standard 25.5" depth, so the reference kitchen is ≈ 38 sq ft), the material you're leaning toward, sink cutouts, tear-out, and who handles stone maintenance. The estimate itemizes your pick; the assumptions and tables always compare all five materials at your inputs.
- Installed rates are shared with our countertop cost calculator — the blend of HomeGuide's and Fixr's published 2026 installed ranges per material, split into slab/delivery and fabrication labor: laminate $26+$18, butcher block $48+$37, granite $70+$35, quartz $78+$32, marble $76+$34 per sq ft. Anchors: Fixr's $3,000 national average (35 sq ft quartz, most pay $1,400–$5,250, quartz ≈ $88/sq ft average) and HomeGuide's $50–$200 installed bands.
- Care model from 2026 sources: granite reseals every 2 years, marble yearly plus a professional honing/polishing visit every 5 years (Rose Restoration: $500–$1,500 per countertop, sealing included — so the honing year skips the reseal); hired-out treatments at $275 vs a ~$40 DIY kit (Fox Granite: pro $200–$420/kitchen, kits $25–$65; Homewyse: $1.16–$2.24/sq ft, May 2026).
- Butcher block carries monthly food-safe mineral oil at about $25/year (retail bottles run $10–$50); scratches sand out with consumer abrasives, so no professional service is modeled. Laminate carries one full replacement at year 12, mid-life of the commonly cited 10–15-year lifespan (Fixr: cheaper materials may need replacement sooner) — a clearly labeled assumption you can subtract if your top lasts.
- Quartz is modeled at zero recurring care — non-porous, never sealed. Natural stone's install also includes one penetrating-sealer treatment ($275), matching our countertop cost calculator.
- typical = region-scaled installed total plus region-scaled 15-year care; the published range is ×0.80 low and ×1.35 high, spanning bid spread on the install and how faithfully sealing and oiling actually happen. Slab, sealer, oil and DIY kits follow your state's materials multiplier; fabrication, cutouts, tear-out and hired-out services its labor multiplier.
- Excluded: sink and faucet, plumbing disconnect/reconnect, edge upgrades (identical $/linear ft across materials — they can't change the ranking), full-height splash, cabinet reinforcement, and inflation on future care.
