Tree Removal Cost Calculator
Crews price removals from the tree's height band and trunk diameter first, then re-price for access — the same tree can cost half as much in an open yard as it does hanging over a roof, and a crane day adds hundreds more. This calculator models the quote the way an arborist writes it: height, diameter, proximity, stump grinding, haul-away and permit, with crew rates adjusted for your state. If the tree is healthy and only space or mess bothers you, switch the first field to trimming and compare before you cut.
Published Cost data last reviewed Re-checked quarterly
Trimming a healthy tree usually costs 40–60% less than removal and keeps the shade.
Measure from ground to the tallest limb, or pace it against a two-story wall (~20 ft).
Measure around the trunk at breast height (4.5 ft) and divide by 3.14.
Rigging over structures runs 25–50% more; crane work adds a half-day flat fee.
Measure across the widest point. Enter 0 to skip stump grinding entirely.
Keeping firewood and chips is the easiest way to cut a few hundred dollars.
Many cities permit trees past a set trunk size or street trees; typical fee $60–$150.

What this estimate assumes
- Range is 80%–135% of the computed typical — the spread between competitive bids and hard jobs, high-cost metros or storm-season schedules.
- Base = 30–60 ft height band × a (trunk 16 in ÷ 16 in)^0.55 diameter factor = $800 before the open-access adjustment.
- Access adjustment: none — open yard with clear drop zone.
- Crew labor, crane, stump grinding and permit dollars scale with your state's labor rates; haul-away and tipping dollars with its material costs (see the regional note under the results).
- Excludes multi-tree discounts, emergency/storm premiums, utility-line coordination (always call 811 / your utility first), arborist reports, and replanting.

Frequently asked questions
How much does it cost to remove a tree?
Nationally, most single-tree removals run $462–$2,571 all-in. Angi's 2026 guide averages about $750 with a $200–$2,000 span by size; LawnStarter puts the typical job at $385–$1,070, or $10–$14 per foot of height. A 40-ft yard tree with stump grinding and full haul-away computes to about $1,095 here.
Why does a tree near my house cost so much more to remove?
When the tree can't simply be felled, the crew dismantles it piece by piece and lowers each cut on ropes — slower, riskier work with more crew members. Angi reports hard-to-reach trees cost 25–50% more, which is why the same 30–60 ft tree moves from about $1,095 open-access to about $1,495 when it hangs over a structure. A crane adds roughly $500 (Angi: $250–$600/day) but often saves labor hours on big lifts.
How much does stump grinding cost, and should I just pull the stump instead?
Grinding runs about $154 for a 16-inch stump and $238 at 30 inches — a $130 minimum covers the trip for small stumps. Full stump-and-root extraction costs more (LawnStarter: $175–$516, averaging $326) and tears up more yard. Grinding 6–8 inches below grade is enough to re-sod the spot; the roots rot on their own.
Do I need a permit to remove a tree on my own property?
It depends entirely on your city or county. Angi pegs tree-removal permits at $60–$150 (modeled at $105 here), and the usual triggers are a trunk past a set diameter, street or right-of-way trees, and protected or heritage species lists — some cities protect certain species at any size. The fastest check is one call to the city's forestry or code office with the species and trunk diameter; a crew that won't make that call for you is a crew to skip, because fines for unpermitted removal run far above the permit fee and can include a mandatory replanting. HOAs can add their own approval layer on top of the city's.
My tree is healthy — is trimming cheaper than removing it?
Usually by a wide margin. A structural prune on the default 30–60 ft tree computes to about $549 versus $1,095 for removal with stump grinding, and the tree keeps adding shade and property value. Angi's trim range runs $75–$1,500 per tree; LawnStarter's by-height table spans $315–$700. Switch the first field of this calculator to “trim it instead” to compare your exact tree.
How do I shave money off a tree-removal quote?
Keep the wood: if the crew leaves trunk logs and chips instead of hauling everything, this model drops about $165 from a mid-size job. Scheduling in winter (dormant season, slower calendar) often beats peak spring, and grouping several trees into one mobilization earns a per-tree discount — crews price the truck and chipper once.
Does homeowners insurance pay for tree removal?
Usually only when the tree has damaged a covered structure — insurers typically pay to remove a tree off your roof or garage, often with a debris-removal cap separate from your dwelling limit, and usually exclude preventive removal of a standing (even dead) tree. The exception worth testing: a documented hazard — an arborist report (~$860 per Angi) flagging a dead tree over the house — sometimes persuades a carrier to cover removal, so ask before declining the job. Photograph everything before the crew starts and keep the itemized invoice; claims pay on documentation. Emergency storm work runs hot: Angi notes complex emergency removals can reach $5,000+, more than a policy may reimburse without pre-approval.
When does a tree removal get dramatically more expensive?
Huge trunks over structures with no crane pad, hollow or split trunks that can't take rigging loads, and jobs touching active power lines (your utility must de-energize or clear them first). Angi prices complex removals at $6,000–$7,000. An arborist report (~$860 per Angi) or a disputed property line adds time and fees — get those settled before the crew arrives.

Open calculatorHow this estimate is calculated
These notes are written for this tool alone: where its base prices come from, how the low–high window is derived, and what the figure deliberately leaves out.
- Height band and trunk diameter (DBH at 4.5 ft) set the base: band bases are the midpoints of Angi's 2026 published ranges — $150–$450 under 30 ft, $450–$1,200 for 30–60 ft, $800–$1,500 for 60–80 ft, $1,000–$2,000 over 80 ft — cross-checked against LawnStarter's $385–$1,070 typical range and $10–$14 per foot of height.
- Diameter scales the base by (DBH ÷ 16 in)^0.55 for removals and (DBH ÷ 16 in)^0.35 for trims — more trunk is more saw time and rigging load, but the crew is on site either way.
- Access multiplies the base: +25% tight access, +50% sectional rigging over structures (Angi reports +25–50% for hard-to-reach trees; LawnStarter up to +50%); the crane tier adds +30% plus a $550 half-day flat (Angi: crane ≈ $500, $250–$600 per day).
- Stump grinding is a $130 single-stump minimum plus $6 per inch beyond 12 in — a curve fitted to Angi's $100–$150 first-stump price and LawnStarter's $158–$450 grinding range; haul-away is $100–$400 by tree volume, inside Angi's $70 haul + $95 chipping and LawnStarter's $50–$90 / $65–$125 figures.
- Every estimate shows low/typical/high at 80% / 100% / 135% of the computed typical; labor, crane, stump and permit lines scale with your state's labor multiplier, haul-away and tipping with its materials multiplier.
- Exclusions: multi-tree land-clearing discounts, emergency/storm premiums (Angi: complex emergency removals to $5,000+), utility de-energizing and line clearing, arborist reports (~$860), root barriers, and replanting.
