Roof Squares Calculator
Roofers don't quote your floor area — they quote squares of actual roof surface, which is the footprint stretched by the pitch. This calculator does that geometry from your footprint and slope, then turns it into what you actually buy: bundles of shingles with cutting waste, underlayment rolls, starter strip, hip-and-ridge caps and vent rolls. Take one measurement tape lap and you can check any shingle delivery or supplier quote against the math.

Measure at the roof edge — eave to ridge side — overhangs included.
The other dimension at the roof edge (gable end to gable end). L-shaped roofs: add each rectangle separately.
Rise per 12 ft of run. Multiplier = √(rise² + 12²) ÷ 12.
Offcuts from valleys, hips and rake cuts. Heavily cut-up roofs can need more.
Check your bundle count on the product sheet — heavier shingles cover less per bundle.
Synthetic is now the default on most reroofs; felt still meets code nearly everywhere.
Eaves + rakes — about the roof perimeter, 2 × (length + width).
A simple gable's ridge = building length; hip roofs — add each diagonal hip.
Roll vent comes in 20-linear-ft rolls (GAF Cobra class).

What this estimate assumes
- Roof surface ≈ 1,677 sq ft = 16.8 squares (1,500 sq ft footprint × 6/12 pitch multiplier 1.118).
- Order 58 bundles (3 per square) plus the 15% cutting waste; bundles always round up — part bundles don't exist.
- Underlayment: 2 synthetic (1,000 sq ft rolls) rolls; starter 160 lf = 2 bundles; ridge 50 lf = 2 cap bundles + 3 vent rolls.
- Materials takeoff only — tear-off, installation labor (HomeGuide: +$300–$350 per square), dumpster, drip edge, valley metal and ice-and-water shield are not included; see the Roof Replacement calculator.
- Range is 80%–135% of the computed typical — bundle and roll street prices swing roughly this much by brand, retailer and promotions.
- Every line is a material and scales with your state's materials multiplier; there is no labor component in a takeoff.

Frequently asked questions
How many bundles of shingles are in a square?
Three, for standard 3-tab and most architectural lines — each bundle covers about 33.3 sq ft. Heavier designer laminates pack 4 bundles into a square and some luxury lines 5, which is why this calculator makes the bundle count a selector instead of assuming 3. On the default 1,500 sq ft footprint at 6/12 with 15% waste, that's 58 standard bundles.
How do I convert roof pitch into a multiplier?
A pitched roof's surface is its footprint stretched by the slope: multiplier = √(rise² + 12²) ÷ 12. A 6/12 roof is ×1.118, a 12/12 is ×1.414. So a 1,500 sq ft footprint under a 6/12 roof is 1,677 sq ft — 16.8 squares of actual shingle surface. The table above lists every pitch this tool models; the geometry is exact, the estimate around it isn't.
How much do roofing shingles cost per square in 2026?
Architectural shingles run $100–$250 per square for materials alone (HomeGuide, 2026) — call it $33–$83 per bundle. Installation labor adds roughly $300–$350 per square, which is why a materials takeoff and a contractor quote are different animals. This calculator prices the materials package only.
How many rolls of underlayment do I need?
It depends on the roll: synthetic underlayment covers 1,000 sq ft per roll, #15 felt 432 sq ft (a 3 ft × 144 ft roll), and #30 felt 216 sq ft. The default job here (~1,929 sq ft to cover) needs 2 synthetic rolls, 5 rolls of #15, or 9 rolls of #30 — buy whole rolls either way. One line this takeoff doesn't price: self-adhering ice-and-water membrane at the eaves and in valleys, which cold-climate codes require and which is cheap insurance everywhere else — figure a couple of extra rolls on top of whichever field underlayment you pick.
Why do I need 10–15% waste on top of the roof area?
Every shingle cut at a valley, hip, rake or dormer throws away part of a bundle; staggering joints eats material too. A long, straight gable roof gets by on 10%. Roofs with hips, open valleys and dormers need 15%, and heavily cut-up roofs can go higher. Suppliers sell whole bundles, so the calculator rounds up after waste.
How many ridge cap shingles and vent rolls do I need?
Measure the ridge plus any hips you'll cap. Cap shingles run about 25 linear ft per bundle (GAF Seal-A-Ridge class) at roughly $2.50–$4.00 per ft; roll ridge vent comes in 20-linear-ft rolls (GAF Cobra class, ≈ $66 list). A simple gable's ridge is the building length — hips on a hip roof add the diagonal runs, so measure them. One nuance: this calculator vents the same length it caps, but only the open ridge gets roll vent — capped hips don't. On a hip roof, either bump the length input to your full capped footage (slightly over-pricing the vent) or run it both ways; the cap line is the one to get right.
Does this include labor, tear-off or the dumpster?
No — this is a materials takeoff for DIY planning or checking a supplier delivery. Tear-off, installation labor (HomeGuide: $300–$350 per square), disposal and code items like ice-and-water shield and drip edge are excluded. For the full installed price use the Roof Replacement calculator, which models labor, layers and permits.
How accurate is footprint × pitch multiplier?
Very, if you measure honestly: measure the footprint at the roof's edge — eaves and rakes included, not the walls — and handle complex roofs by adding each rectangle separately (main body, dormers, garage breezeways) before applying the multiplier. Valleys and hips don't change area, only waste. Below a 2/12 pitch asphalt shingles aren't permitted by manufacturers at all — low-slope roofs need membrane systems instead.

These notes are written for this tool alone: where its base prices come from, how the low–high window is derived, and what the figure deliberately leaves out.
- Roof area = footprint (measured at the roof edge, overhangs included) × pitch multiplier, where multiplier = √(rise² + 12²) ÷ 12 — exact plane geometry, not an approximation.
- Base material prices are 2025–2026 national retail: shingle bundles $50 (3/sq), $55 (4/sq), $62 (5/sq) — inside HomeGuide's $100–$250 per square materials band for architectural shingles; starter strip ≈ $0.45/lf (GAF Pro-Start, 120 lf per bundle, $45–$60); hip & ridge cap ≈ $3.00/lf (Seal-A-Ridge class, 25 lf/bundle); roll ridge vent ≈ $66 per 20-lf roll (Cobra class); coil nails + sealant allowed at $9 per square (~2.5 lb).
- Underlayment uses standard manufacturer roll sizes — synthetic 1,000 sq ft (~$130/roll, e.g. FeltBuster listings at $119–$145), #15 felt 432 sq ft (~$30), #30 felt 216 sq ft (~$28) — consistent with HomeGuide's $0.10–$0.80 per sq ft underlayment materials range.
- Waste is applied as a user choice (10% simple gable / 15% hips, valleys, dormers) before rounding bundles and rolls UP to whole units.
- Every estimate shows low/typical/high at 80% / 100% / 135% of the computed typical — the honest swing in bundle and roll street prices across brands, retailers and promotions.
- All lines are materials and scale with your state's materials multiplier; a takeoff has no labor component.
- Excludes tear-off, installation labor, dumpster, drip edge, valley metal, ice-and-water shield, pipe boots and permits — pair with the Roof Replacement calculator for the installed price.
