Deck Build Cost Calculator
A ground-level pressure-treated deck and a walkout composite deck with the same footprint can differ by a factor of three in price. This calculator itemizes the five cost centers behind that spread — framing and footings, decking boards, railing and stairs, labor, and the permit — and adjusts each line for labor and material rates in your state. Change any input and the numbers update instantly; nothing is submitted or stored.
Published Cost data last reviewed Re-checked quarterly
Main platform area — a 14×20 deck is 280 sq ft.
Surface boards only — framing is PT lumber in every option.
Taller decks need larger beams, deeper footings, and guardrails.
Guardrail is code-required on open sides once the surface is 30+ in. up.
Count risers down to grade; 5–6 steps is typical off a raised deck.
Roughly one per 4–6 ft of beam span; frost depth sets how deep.
Most jurisdictions require one for attached decks or anything over 30 in. high.

What this estimate assumes
- Basis: 280 sq ft of pressure-treated decking, ground level (under 30 in.), 42 linear ft of railing, 5 stair steps, 8 footings, permit included.
- The 0.80–1.35 spread covers board layout and waste, framing upgrades, access, and site conditions between competing quotes.
- Material lines scale with your state's materials multiplier, labor lines with its labor multiplier; permit fees follow labor (local administrative costs).
- Excludes tearing out an old deck, site grading, electrical (lights, outlets), pergolas or built-ins, and engineered drawings for freestanding or second-story decks.

Frequently asked questions
How much does it cost to build a 14×20 (280 sq ft) deck?
At national-average pricing, a ground-level 280 sq ft deck with 42 ft of railing, 5 steps, and a permit runs about $10,000 in pressure-treated pine (roughly $8,000–$13,500) and about $13,600 in composite ($10,900–$18,300). Angi's 2026 data puts typical deck builds at $4,340–$12,652 nationally; our 280 sq ft default lands near the top of that band because it includes railings, stairs, and the permit fee that bare-platform quotes leave out.
Do I need a permit to build a deck?
In most jurisdictions, yes — permits are required whenever the deck attaches to the house, stands more than 30 in. above grade, or carries a roof/structure. Expect to submit a simple site plan with the application: deck footprint, setbacks from the property lines, and the ledger attachment detail. Fees typically run $100–$500 (we model $250 typical). Skipping the permit can force teardown, block a future home sale, and void contractor insurance, so treat it as mandatory unless your building department says otherwise.
Is a composite deck worth the extra cost over pressure-treated wood?
On a 280 sq ft deck, composite adds roughly $3,500 up front (about $13,600 vs $10,000 installed). You get it back slowly: composite boards last 25–30 years with soap-and-water cleaning, while PT decking needs staining every 2–3 years ($300–$600 a visit) and board replacement by year 15–20. If you'll stay in the home 10+ years, most owners find the math works; run our deck material compare tool for the 25-year total-cost view.
How much do deck stairs and railing add to the price?
Railing runs about $50–$90 per linear foot installed (posts, rails, balusters, labor), and each stair step adds roughly $65–$110 — Angi's floor for basic wood stairs is $25–$50 per step, with finished composite or capped stairs well above that. A ground-level deck under 30 in. usually needs neither, which is why low decks cost half as much per square foot.
How many footings does my deck need?
Plan on one footing per 4–6 ft of beam span — a 14×20 deck on two beams typically takes 8. Frost depth governs how deep each pier goes (4 ft in Chicago, none in Florida), and undisturbed soil or engineered helical piers cost more than a poured tube. Our model prices a dug-and-poured concrete footing at about $150–$250 each installed.
How long does it take to build a deck?
A simple ground-level PT deck goes up in 1–3 days once materials arrive. Raised or elevated composite decks with railings and stairs typically take 4–7 working days. The hidden calendar item is the footing cure: most departments inspect footings before the pour, and the concrete should cure — commonly several days, longer in cold weather — before it carries framing loads, so plan a pause between dig day and frame day on top of the week or two the permit itself takes.
Why does labor cost almost as much as materials on a deck?
Deck framing is structural carpentry: beams, joists, ledger flashing, and stairs all have load-path requirements inspectors check. Decks.com pegs deck labor at $8–$22 per sq ft on its own, which is why a build that looks like $10 of lumber is $25–$55 per sq ft installed. Complex heights, hidden fasteners, and hardwoods (which need predrilling) push labor up further.

These notes are written for this tool alone: where its base prices come from, how the low–high window is derived, and what the figure deliberately leaves out.
- Inputs: deck area, surface material (PT, cedar, composite, PVC, ipe), height class, railing linear ft, stair steps, footing count, and a permit toggle.
- Base data researched Sept 2026: Angi's 2026 deck guide ($4,340–$12,652 typical builds; PT $15–$75/sq ft; stairs $25–$50/step), Fixr ($15–$55/sq ft installed; PT $15–$25, composite $28–$40), and Decks.com material rates (PT $3–$6, composite $5–$14, ipe $10–$20/sq ft; labor $8–$22/sq ft).
- typical = materials × state materials multiplier + labor × state labor multiplier + permit × labor multiplier; the published range is ×0.80 low and ×1.35 high.
- Framing is priced as pressure-treated lumber in every option — only surface boards, rail caps, and install labor change with the material chosen.
- Defaults model a 280 sq ft ground-level deck with 42 ft of railing, 5 steps, 8 footings, and a permit — a typical single-level backyard deck.
- Excluded: demolition of an existing deck, site grading, electrical, pergolas and built-ins, and structural engineering for freestanding or second-story decks (quote those separately).
