Countertop Cost Calculator

Countertops are quoted by the square foot, but the number that matters is your fabricator's: slab grade, edge profile, cutouts and tear-out all move the total. This calculator prices your run the way a shop would — linear feet × depth against 2026 per-material rates, with each add-on itemized — then adjusts labor and slab prices separately for your state. Measure the run along the wall (including any island) and you'll know within a bid spread what the quotes should say.

Length of counter along the wall plus island — most kitchens have 14–19 linear ft.

Standard is 25.5 in (24-in. base cabinet + overhang); a 24" vanity top would use 22–24.

Typicals blend HomeGuide's and Fixr's 2026 installed ranges; slab grade moves any stone ±50%.

Fabricators include a straight or eased edge; decorative profiles are priced per linear foot.

Sink openings — many shops bundle the first one, so confirm before paying for it.

Slide-in or drop-in range openings; polished cutouts cost more than covered ones.

Same-material strip up the wall; full-height tile is priced by the backsplash calculator.

Tear-out runs $50–$300; some quotes bundle it, others bill it separately.

What this estimate assumes

  • Range is 80%–135% of the computed typical — the spread between sharp competitive bids and high-cost metros, premium slab grades or tricky layouts.
  • 18 linear ft × 25.5" depth ≈ 38 sq ft of countertop. Most kitchens have 14–19 linear ft (30–40 sq ft) of counter.
  • Quartz is priced at $110 per sq ft installed — the blend of HomeGuide's and Fixr's published 2026 ranges, split $78 slab/delivery + $32 fabrication labor.
  • Labor lines (fabrication, edge profiling, cutouts, splash install, tear-out) scale with your state's labor rates; slab, splash material and sealer with its material prices.
  • Cutouts are priced separately at $200 per sink and $250 per cooktop opening — many fabricators bundle the first cutout into fabrication, so ask before paying it twice.

Frequently asked questions

How do I convert linear feet to square feet for countertops?

Multiply the run length by the depth: a 18-linear-ft run at the standard 25.5" depth is 38 square feet. Most kitchens have 14–19 linear feet (30–40 sq ft) of counter — both Fixr's and HomeGuide's 2026 guides size the "average kitchen" at 30–40 sq ft, and an island typically adds 6–10 linear ft.

How much does a quartz countertop cost for an average kitchen?

About $4,408 installed for 38 sq ft with one sink cutout ($3,526–$5,950 across bid and metro spreads). That sits above Fixr's 2026 national average of $3,000 (most pay $1,400–$5,250) — this model blends to the middle of the $50–$200/sq ft quartz bands both guides publish, i.e. a mid-grade slab rather than entry level — but inside HomeGuide's $1,500–$8,000 range for an average kitchen.

Is granite cheaper than quartz?

On paper granite lists lower — HomeGuide puts it at $80–$150 per sq ft installed vs quartz at $50–$200, and our blended granite typical is $4,491 vs $4,408 for quartz on the same 38 sq ft kitchen. In practice the ranges overlap heavily: slab grade moves each material by $50+/sq ft, so a 2-cm entry granite can cost more than a mid-grade quartz. Granite also adds $200–$350 resealing every year or two; quartz never needs it.

What raises the quote most — edge profile, cutouts, or backsplash?

For a typical 18-linear-ft kitchen: an ogee edge adds about $540, each extra sink or cooktop cutout runs $100–$300, and a 4-in. stone splash adds roughly $80–$100 per 10 linear ft. Edge and splash scale with your run length; cutouts are flat fees, which is why a small bathroom vanity with a curved edge can price like a much bigger straight run.

Does the quote include hauling away my old countertops?

Only if you ask. HomeGuide pegs removal at $7–$14 per sq ft ($200–$560 for an average kitchen) while Fixr's 2026 guide quotes $50–$300 and notes most contractors include it in replacement labor — but plenty don't, so confirm it line by line (the toggle in this calculator adds it explicitly). Sequencing matters too: tear-out happens before templating, because the fabricator measures off the exposed, leveled cabinets — the old top can't come off and go back on. And ask who handles disposal: a stone top is heavy masonry many curbside services won't take.

Do my countertops need to be sealed?

Granite, marble, soapstone and poured concrete need a penetrating sealer — HomeGuide prices the treatment at $200–$350, and it recurs every 1–2 years for marble and concrete, less often for dense granite. Quartz and laminate are non-porous and never need sealing; engineered quartz's zero-maintenance surface is a big part of why it outsells natural stone.

How long does countertop installation take?

Installation day itself is fast — HomeGuide says a quartz deck goes in in as few as 3–4 hours, with large kitchens taking 1–3 days. The crew sets slabs on leveling shims, epoxy-joins and color-matches the seams, and finishes sink and cooktop cutouts on site; plan on about 24 hours of caulk-and-seam cure before the plumber reconnects the sink. The calendar is dominated by fabrication: templating happens after old counters come off (or cabinets are set), then allow 1–2 weeks for slab cutting and edging before the crew returns. Faucet and sink reconnection is a separate plumber visit in many jobs.

Is laminate still worth it?

For rentals and flip budgets, yes: our blended laminate typical is $1,883 for the same 38 sq ft kitchen where quartz runs $4,408 — a $2,500 gap. HomeGuide notes laminate won't add resale value and dulls/scratches within a few years, but post-formed laminate installs in a day with no templating wait. If you're staying 5+ years, quartz's durability usually wins the total-cost math (see the countertop-compare calculator).

How this estimate is calculated

These notes are written for this tool alone: where its base prices come from, how the low–high window is derived, and what the figure deliberately leaves out.

  • You enter the run in linear feet and depth; area = length × depth, and a typical kitchen is 14–19 linear ft (30–40 sq ft) per Fixr's and HomeGuide's 2026 sizing.
  • Typical installed $/sq ft per material blends HomeGuide's 2026 replacement ranges (laminate $20–$80, butcher block $50–$150, granite $80–$150, quartz $50–$200, marble $40–$150, concrete $50–$150, soapstone $60–$130) with Fixr's 2026 ranges, then splits slab/delivery from fabrication labor using HomeGuide's granite split (slab $40–$100 + labor $10–$50/sq ft) and Fixr's 15–30% labor share.
  • Edge upgrades price per linear foot from HomeGuide's $10–$60/LF edge table and Fixr's 2026 profile pricing (bullnose $10–$15, mitered $20–$25, ogee $20–$25, Dupont $20–$40/LF); the eased edge is modeled as included.
  • Cutouts are modeled at $200 per sink opening (HomeGuide $100–$300, Fixr $100–$200) and $250 per cooktop opening (HomeGuide $120–$400), scaled with labor rates.
  • A 4-in. same-material splash strip prices at $14–$28/sq ft by material (HomeGuide: stone splash $10–$34/sq ft, most 4–6 in. high); full-height tile splash is out of scope for this tool.
  • Tear-out uses $6/sq ft with a $120 floor (between HomeGuide's $7–$14/sq ft and Fixr's $50–$300 flat) and scales with labor; natural stone and concrete add one $275 sealer treatment (HomeGuide: $200–$350).
  • Every estimate shows low/typical/high at 80% / 100% / 135% of the computed typical — competitive bid to high-cost metro, plus the slab-grade variance both guides document. Excludes plumbing disconnect/reconnect (plumbers bill $45–$150/hr), the sink and faucet themselves, cabinet leveling or reinforcement, and structural changes.
