Tile Installation Cost Calculator
Tile quotes swing from about $10 to $45 per square foot installed for reasons most quick guides skip: the pattern being laid, what sits under the tile, and whether the area has to be waterproofed. This calculator prices your exact combination — material, tile size, pattern, substrate prep and waterproofing — against current labor and material rates in your state. Change any input and the low, typical and high figures re-price instantly, itemized the way a contractor's bid would.
Published Cost data last reviewed Re-checked quarterly
Floors: length × width. Walls: height × width of each tiled surface.
Showers cost more per sq ft: pan slope, niches, waterproofing, extra cuts.
Typical retail: ceramic $4–$15, porcelain $2–$15, stone $5–$45, glass $10+ per sq ft.
Small mosaics add joints and layout time; very large tile needs flat substrates.
Diagonal and herringbone add cutting time and 15–20% extra tile waste.
Wood subfloors need backer board or an uncoupling membrane; a sound slab may not.
Required in showers and wet walls — pick a membrane option for those.
Epoxy resists stains and never needs sealing, at a premium.
Demo of old tile runs $2–$7 per sq ft plus a dump fee.

What this estimate assumes
- Tile prices assume a mid-grade product of the chosen class — published bands run ceramic $4–$15, porcelain $2–$15, stone $5–$45 and glass $10–$180 per sq ft (Angi) — so the low end of the tile line is a budget grade and the high end a premium one.
- Labor starts from a $10 per sq ft national base (HomeGuide lists $8–$20; Angi $3–$15), multiplied by the location, tile-size and pattern factors you selected.
- Labor lines scale with your state's labor index, material lines with its materials index; the fixed disposal fee follows the labor index.
- Not included: heated floor mats, decorative accent tile and trim profiles, natural-stone sealing, moving fixtures or furniture, plumbing or electrical work (shower valve, niche lighting), and permits.

Frequently asked questions
Why does herringbone tile cost more to install?
Setters cut roughly twice as many pieces for herringbone as for a straight grid, and the layout has to be snapped off a true center line or the pattern drifts. The calculator adds a 30% labor premium and 20% cutting waste for herringbone versus 10% waste for a straight layout — on a 150 sq ft ceramic floor that is roughly $500–$600 more than the same tile laid straight.
How much extra tile should I order?
Order 10% over your measured area for straight or brick layouts, 15% for diagonal, and 20% for herringbone or other cut-heavy patterns — the estimator already builds that waste into the tile line. Keep at least one unopened box after the job: dye lots change and a cracked tile years from now will be impossible to match.
Do I need cement backer board under floor tile?
Over a wood subfloor, yes — either 1/4" or 1/2" cement board screwed and seam-taped, or an uncoupling membrane such as DITRA. Thinsetting tile straight to plywood is the classic cracked-grout failure. Over a sound structural slab you can often bond directly, which is why the substrate selector includes a 'none' option. Wet areas then add a waterproofing membrane on top.
Is large-format tile more expensive to install?
Modestly at first, sharply if the slab isn't flat. Anything over 24" telegraphs every dip in the substrate (the industry standard allows about 1/4" of variation in 10 feet), and installers use leveling clips and medium-bed thinset. This calculator adds 20% to labor for over-24" tile plus about $0.60 per sq ft of extra setting supplies.
How much does it cost to tile a shower compared with a floor?
Showers run roughly 35–50% more per square foot in labor because of the pan slope, niche cuts and waterproofing, and they require a membrane a dry floor doesn't. Nationally a full shower re-tile lands around $1,800–$5,000 (Angi averages $2,700), versus $300–$1,300 for a typical bathroom floor. The location selector applies these premiums automatically.
How long does a tile installation take?
A 150 sq ft floor is usually a one-to-two-day job once materials are on site, plus a day if demo and disposal are included. Cure windows, not tile-setting, stretch the calendar: thinset normally needs about 24 hours before grouting, and cement grout roughly 72 hours before it is sealed or a shower sees water. Epoxy grout sets in short working windows, so pros may split a large floor's grouting across two visits.
Do I need a permit to install tile?
Usually not — like-for-like floor and wall tile is cosmetic in most jurisdictions. Permits enter the picture when the job relocates plumbing (moving a shower drain), opens structure, or when a city requires one for any wet-area rebuild — and where they do, the new shower pan typically has to pass a 24-hour flood test at rough-in, inspected before a single tile goes down. Check your local building department; permit and inspection fees are not part of this estimate.
Is epoxy grout worth the extra cost?
It adds roughly $2–$4 per sq ft installed but never needs sealing and shrugs off the grease and stains that ruin cement grout behind ranges, on shower floors, and in entryways. For a low-use bathroom or bedroom floor, sealed cement grout performs fine at the standard price.

Open calculatorHow this estimate is calculated
These notes are written for this tool alone: where its base prices come from, how the low–high window is derived, and what the figure deliberately leaves out.
- Base labor: a $10 per sq ft national-average installation rate, blended from HomeGuide's $8–$20/sq ft labor band and Angi's $3–$15/sq ft band (both accessed September 2026).
- Tile purchase prices use mid-points of published 2025 material bands — Angi: ceramic $4–$15, porcelain $2–$15, natural stone $5–$45, glass $10–$180 per sq ft; HomeGuide: tile materials $2–$30 per sq ft.
- Location, tile-size and pattern factors multiply the labor base (mosaic 1.35×, over-24" tile 1.20×, shower walls 1.35×, herringbone 1.30×); cutting waste of 10–20% by pattern scales the tile quantity.
- Substrate and waterproofing add-ons are priced per square foot from common retail systems: cement board ≈ $2.00, uncoupling membrane ≈ $2.00, self-leveler + membrane ≈ $3.50, paint-on membrane ≈ $2.00, sheet membrane ≈ $2.50, foam board ≈ $3.50 installed.
- Range logic: each line carries its own spread — tile −25%/+60% for grade variance within a class, labor −15%/+30%, setting supplies and prep layers −15%/+25%, demo −10%/+30%, disposal −10%/+25% — then lines scale by your state's labor and materials multipliers.
- Excluded: heated floor mats, accent tile and trim profiles, stone sealing, furniture or appliance moving, plumbing and electrical work, and permits (rarely required for like-for-like tile).
