Get a Real Quote for Your Home Repair
Submit one request and we route it to contractors in our network who cover your trade and area. On a deadline? Use our bid checklist to collect three competing quotes yourself — either way, start with a free cost estimate.
A quote is only useful if it is real, so here is exactly what FixTally does with your request. We save it, email you a confirmation, and send it to contractors in our network whose trades and service area match what you described. You see the outcome: the confirmation tells you how many contractors received it.
Straight talk about coverage: the FixTally contractor network is new, and in most areas we do not yet have a pro for every trade. If nobody covers your project yet, your request stays saved for 14 days — if a matching pro joins in that window, we send them your request and email you. We do not shop your details around to other lead sellers. If you are on a timeline, skip the wait and work the bid checklist below.

What happens after you submit
- 1
We save and confirm your request
Choose the service, state, project type, budget range, and timeline. Optional notes (scope, access, urgency) make any later estimate more accurate. You get a confirmation email with a copy of what you sent.
- 2
We route it to matching contractors
Your request goes to network contractors whose trades and service area match. Matching is by relevance — trade category and geography — not by who paid the most for your contact details. If no one matches yet, your request is saved — when a matching contractor joins, we send them your request and email you that it happened.
- 3
You hear from us either way
When a contractor takes your request, they contact you directly with a free estimate — compare price, scope, timeline and credentials, then hire or walk away. If nobody takes it, you will not hear from contractors — so for anything urgent, work the bid checklist below. No spam either way.
Privacy first
Your project details go only to contractors matched to your request — we do not resell them as a lead list. Review how we handle data in our privacy policy.
No obligation
A request is for planning and comparison. You never have to hire through FixTally, accept a bid, or pay a fee to submit one.
Getting quotes on your own: the checklist
However you find contractors, the bid process is the same. Work these six steps and you will end up with comparable written quotes instead of three phone guesses.
- 1
Write the scope down before you call anyone
One page: what you want done, the materials or fixtures you expect, the finish level, and any access problems (narrow stairs, old wiring, HOA rules). Send the same page to every bidder — identical scope is what makes bids comparable.
- 2
Ask at least three companies for an itemized quote
Itemized means materials and labor separated, plus permits, disposal, and any subcontracted work. A single lump number is not a quote you can check, and you cannot see where one bidder is padding or cutting corners.
- 3
Verify license and insurance yourself
Ask each bidder for their license number and a current certificate of insurance for general liability and workers’ compensation, then check the license against your state’s contractor license lookup (search “[your state] contractor license lookup”). An insured crew protects you if someone gets hurt on the job.
- 4
Compare scope first, price second
Put the bids side by side and cross out anything missing — a bid without permit costs or disposal is not cheaper, it is incomplete. Then run the matching FixTally calculator so you know the estimated range before you judge anyone’s number.
- 5
Tie payments to finished work
Never pay the full amount up front. A deposit for materials is normal; the balance follows completed milestones. Get the payment schedule, the change-order process (how price changes get approved in writing), and the warranty terms into the contract itself.
- 6
Walk away from the warning signs
High-pressure "this price is only good today" tactics, a request for most of the money in cash up front, no written contract, no license number, or a bid dramatically below the other two. The cheapest bid is expensive when the crew disappears mid-job.
Estimates on this site are ranges built from published cost data, not quotes — see how we build them.

Frequently asked questions
Is it free to submit a request?
Yes. Submitting a request on FixTally costs nothing and carries no obligation to hire. It is free for homeowners because contractors pay a fee only if and when they accept a matched request.
What actually happens after I submit?
We save your request, email you a confirmation, and route it to contractors in our network whose trades and service area match. If no network contractor covers your trade and area yet — which is common while the network is young — your request stays saved for 14 days, and if a pro who covers your trade and area joins in that window, we send them your request and email you. The confirmation screen tells you which of the two happened.
How long until a contractor contacts me?
We do not promise a timeframe. When contractors receive your request they usually respond within a few days, but coverage is still limited in most markets. If you are working to a deadline, use the bid checklist below to request quotes from local pros directly — you can have three bids in hand this week without waiting on us.
How is my contact information used?
Your project details go only to contractors matched to your request, so they can prepare an estimate. We do not sell your information as a bulk lead list. See our privacy policy for full details on data handling and your choices.
How many quotes should I get?
Three is the working minimum for most projects: enough to see the spread between low and high, few enough to compare properly. Ask for the same scope from each bidder so the numbers are actually comparable, and be suspicious of a bid that lands far below the other two.
Should I research typical costs before requesting quotes?
Yes, and it is the single best thing you can do before taking bids. Run the matching FixTally cost calculator to get an estimated range for your project, then use that range to spot outlier bids and ask better questions when the numbers arrive.
